There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

We loved the historic neighborhood we stayed in, but others might find it a bit tawdry. No one spoke English, so brush up on your Spanish. We got along ok. Close to whatever we needed. Be sure to go to the market. Day trips were awesome. Buses were questionably reliable and usually full. Grocery store near us had everything we needed. We usually cooked at home but found a good bakery, pizza place and empanadas nearby. Be aware that if you need to do laundry, you take it to a bodega where they do the laundry for you. That was a new one for us. Walking on the pedestrian area with stores galore was a highlight. The plaza de Julio was awesome. Be sure to go there. Leave enough time if you are a detail oriented person. We stayed 16 days and it wasn't enough.

Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty...
Salta sits in a valley surrounded by amazing natural beauty in every direction. The city itself is a bit run-down, narrow broken sidewalks, poor street drainage after rains, old buildings. But it has it's charm!
There are a few great neighborhoods for food, bars and cafes. Nice teleferico to see city from, great museum of High Altitude with preserved Inca children. And going North to Tres Cruces or South to Cafayate will astonish your eyes. Gorgeous natural scenery!!

Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian...
Salta is a nice, tranquil, smaller feel of an Argentinian city than say Mendoza or BA. It is a tad run down, broken sidewalks, bit more trash on streets than other cities, but it has charm regardless. The people are very friendly, never once did I feel unsafe anywhere day or night, and the surroundings/nature/beauty of the landscape is gorgeous! It is a great city to base from and explore all that the province has to offer.
Without a doubt the best restaurant with the best prices is on Calle Balcarce and called '802 Cocina a las Brasas'. I ate there 4 times!!
Also go to MAAM and see the preserved frozen Inca children found on a mountain top in 1999.

Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled.
Lots to see and Lucas helped us to get settled. He was great. Gave us information about the most important museum and organized tickets.
We went to the restaurant neigbourhood and saw oena dancing and music.
This is a fairly new hotel about 10 mins walk from Salta city centre. The staff are all exceptionally helpful. We stayed twice, one night each. The rooms are well appointed. The second time our room was smaller (and cheaper) but still fine for one night. There is a pleasant, small outside area in which one can chill, though the seats get a bit hard after a while. But overall this hotel is excellent value for its location, breakfast and room quality.
This is a newer apartment, in a safe location just outside the central part of Salta, about 15-20 min walk from Salta Shopping Alto Moa, or 40 min walk from the central plaza 9.Julio. The apart is clean, quiet, safe and has what you need for an extended stay. The bed is firm, the a/c works well, the jungle shower is hot, tv has Netflix, internet works well. There are supermarket and restaurants in the area, all in all 100% recommended.
- very friendly host is proactive and helps you out wherever he can.
- very new and bright.
- great showers with good water pressure.
- my dorm had airconditioning.
- breakfast is good (croissants, toast, fresh fruit, coffee etc)
- good and thick matresses (25 cm)
- beds with curtains
- HUGE lockers for all your belongings. Biggest I've seen so far.
One of the best hostels I stayed in during my travel in Argentina.
The hotel was in a temporary location during my stay, it was next door than the original hotel as I believe this was getting refurbishment. However this was fine and I really enjoyed my stay, the staff so was so welcoming to me, any issues I had were quickly resolved. They were extremely helpful with tourist tips and where to change my money as well. If I come back I will return to this Hotel.
Well-located hotel a block from Salta's main square. A comfortable but soulless largish hotel. Bonus is the rooftop pool, but, again, could have been made a lot more charming with better seating, more tables, umbrellas and a bar that was actually open and staffed! Breakfast adequate. No comparison to Vicuna Hotel, where we also stayed. See my review. And more expensive!
It was Christmas Eve so quite quiet to be honest in regards of previous comments.
The guys at the reception were amazing. I was by myself, alone and I am really ok with that. But they invited me to their table and we had a chat for most of the night.
Just lovely people in the northern part of Argentina.
I had a room for myself. Comfy and nothing to complain about.
A wonderful little hotel in one of the nicest streets in Salta, a stone’s throw from a colourful church and some great restaurants, including Doña Salta and La Salteñería. The hotel staff was so attentive, helpful and kind. The garden at the back with a pool and comfortable loungers is charming, and ideal for a rest after an excursion. Nice breakfast options, too.
The staff was very kind and helpful. The room was a little bit smal, but very authentically and charming regarding style. They served local breakfast upon request, with freshly pressed orange juice. The give us a lot of tips for the rest of our road trip in Chile and Argentina.
That's an amazing apartement. It looks just like on the pictures. It's big with a lot of space and everything was really nice and clean. Location is amazing and the hosts nice. So definitely would recommend staying here. Tats probably one of the nicest apartments in Salta!
The staff at Ayres de Salta were friendly and helpful. We visited during the busy Semana Santa, and they were able to find an extra cot for our room because I had mistakenly booked to small of a room. Room was typical hotel style room, but clean and quiet.
The staff is super friendly, professional, and helpful. The hotel is clean and organized, and breakfast is served promptly. The food is great according to the cultural context. Good hot water, big rooms. Beautiful antique architecture with character.
incredibly stylish and comfortable hotel with beautiful rooms and lounge areas in perfect location to explore Salta. Restaurant recommendations were great. Staff very helpful and breakfast really good.
awesome location. The hotel got a Spanish-like ambient. It has a very good ranked restaurant in the facilities, food was excellent.
the rooms are big enough, comfortable beds.
super staff attention.
The Vicuna hotels in Cafayate and Salta are both gems. The decoration is delightful and staff are very helpful. The reception staff went out of their way to assist us with our many queries.
The hotel is in the central area of the city only two blocks from the main plaza. The staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel is clean, elegant and beautifully maintained.
Excelent location in the heart of Salta ... easy access to the Plaza, shops, and restaurants.
Staff were very friendly and check in was easy.
Lots of breakfast choices.
